Types of Reactions: Introduction
At some point you have probably seen a dramatic example of a chemical reaction like the one shown in the picture here. A scientist adds one chemical to another and lots of smoke and bubbling take place in response. Some chemical reactions are violent and explosive and take place quickly; others are quiet and take place only over long periods of time. Examples of chemical reactions are all around us. They are responsible for the energy you get from your food, for the development of many everyday products, and for the movement of natural nutrient cycles on Earth. In this section, you will learn how to formally define a chemical reaction, learn about different kinds of reactions, and get to produce some chemical reactions of your own.
